What does a ShadowCat do?
The Honors College ShadowCats student recruitment program was established to host events and visits by high school national scholars, Flinn finalists, and other prospective honors students. ShadowCats are actively involved in prospective student recruitment events, information sessions/panels, and Honors College events.
Some ways to get involved include assisting day visitors with viewing an Honors residence hall or sitting in on an Honors course. Some ShadowCats support our overnight campus visitation programs by hosting prospective students. Others reinforce our efforts to reach out to prospective students by making telephone calls or writing personalized notes. No matter how a ShadowCat chooses to get involved, these experiences provide opportunities for ShadowCats to develop unique skills and experiences while serving as representatives of The Honors College to prospective students and their family members.

How do I get involved?
We have our main training sessions at the beginning of each academic year, and smaller ones near the beginning of spring semester. Want to join mid-semester? Just send us an email saying you’re interested, and you can set up an appointment with Caroline Nelson or Brittany Smith to have a private training session.

I live off campus. What ShadowCats opportunities are there for me?
The real question is what ShadowCats opportunities aren’t there for you! The only ShadowCat activity limited to on-campus ShadowCats is overnight hosting of prospective students. For a breakdown of what ShadowCats opportunities there are for everyone, see the previous question.

Why should I be a ShadowCat?
The benefits are numerous.  It’s rewarding to work with potential incoming students and help them “learn the ropes.” The time commitment is flexible, allowing you to participate in a meaningful way just as your schedule allows. We provide you with specialized training to enhance your inherent talent and charisma!  But perhaps the best part of being a ShadowCat is the opportunity to give back to UA in a significant way, build camaraderie with your peers in The Honors College, and engage in activities and events that are both productive and fun. Plus, you get lots of free food and a great resume builder!

I really don’t have a lot of time in my schedule. Can I still be a ShadowCat?

Of course! We have many opportunities for you to participate, ranging from a one-hour commitment to a two-night commitment. Opportunities arise on all days of the week and at all times of day, so if you are only available Fridays at lunchtime, there is an opportunity for you! We understand the lives of busy students like you, and the time commitment is as flexible as you need it to be.

It’s the middle of the school year; is it too late to get involved now?
Absolutely not! You can still get involved. Just send us an email saying you’re interested, and you can set up an appointment with Caroline Nelson or Brittany Smith to have a private training session.
